  • Notes
    • At age sixteen Ellis joined the U.S. Navy. At the time of his discharge four years later, he was the youngest petty officer in the Navy. He homesteaded in Wyoming in 1916. He served in the Army in World War I and was wounded in the battle of Chateau-Thierry, France. He took up steam engineering and ran the light plant in Yankton, South Dakota for one year. He was later employed by a Minnesota saw mill that sent him to Bend, Oregon. During World War II he was in Alaska helping to build the Alkan Highway and barracks and camps. After the war he was a skilled worker at the port of Debarkation, Seattle, Washington until his retirement. Ellis and Effie visited Minnesota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin relatives in 1966. A pre-40th wedding anniversary dinner was held and friends enjoyed the fellowship with them. In Wisconsin, in addition to visiting Marion and Marie Slocum and family, they attended the 34th national convention of the Military Order of the Purple Heart in Milwaukee. Because of his World War I wounds, Ellis was the recipient of a purple heart and had long been a member of the organization. Effie was a division president of the auxiliary for the West Cost and she was on the national nominating committee. Their son Dennis came to South Dakota to drive home with them. Ellis passed away suddenly at Cody, Wyoming.
